Become The Best Physician You Can With An Orthopedic Fellowship

It is common knowledge that a great deal of work is required to become a doctor. Years of undergraduate school, followed by medical school and any other type of specialized training is required for anyone to become a doctor. It takes serious dedication and effort and self discipline.

Some people are just not made for this type of work. You have to be truly dedicated and love the profession to do what it takes to become a doctor. And all doctors are not created equal. An orthopedic physician or surgeon requires extra training in their specific field.

Becoming an orthopedic surgeon is a very competitive process. Only about three or four percent of all doctors in the United States are orthopedic doctors. Some of these practice general orthopedics, but others go on to become specialists.

The process of becoming an orthopedic doctor is similar to that required to become any other type of doctor, after undergraduate studies, medical school follows. A residency consists of five years, one spent in regular medicine, and the other four in orthopedic medicine.

For the orthopedic doctor that wants to broaden his horizons, or, rather, narrow them, there are many orthopedic specialties that they can choose to go into. Some of these include hip replacement, joint replacement, hand and wrist, foot and ankle, spine surgery, orthopedic sports medicine, pediatric orthopedics and many others.

In order to gain training in one of these subspecialties, the doctor goes on to a fellowship. An orthopedic fellowship is offered by many hospitals and universities. Generally an orthopedic fellowship is offered by the subspecialty that it is under. A hospital may offer a orthopedic oncology fellowship or a university might run a pediatric orthopedic fellowship. The same goes for every other type of subspecialty in orthopedics.

An orthopedic fellowship normally runs for one year, but sometimes for two. During this time, there is both clinical and operative training in that specific area. On top of this there is normally a research element to the fellowship as well. This gives a very well rounded training, both with hands-on experience, as well as studying and research.

The benefits of taking a orthopedic fellowship are great. A huge amount of knowledge is gained during this relatively short time. Working with other doctors who have years of experience in the chosen field can have a huge impact on the person. They can learn much more than they did during their residency, as they have the opportunity to focus time and energy on this specific area.

Becoming an orthopedic physician is not easy by any measure. Then to add to that specializing, with the extra work required, it is a difficult road. However, it can be a very rewarding one when you are able to work in exactly the area you want to, and you can make a difference in so many people's lives.
